Why no name board at Istanbul Airport

You clear baggage. The phone still flickers between bars. In your head, the picture from other trips: someone with a sheet that says “Ivanov,” smiling from the crowd.

In Istanbul that picture often never shows up. Around you are company placards, someone typing in WhatsApp, someone simply waiting by the right exit. You will not find a personal name board. And that is not because the transfer “forgot” you. That is how these airports work.

What is actually going on

At IST and SAW, a personalized name board for a commercial meetup is not allowed. Not “discouraged.” Not “uncommon.” Banned.

Placards did not disappear. They just show the company name, not yours. You are still met by name: they check the booking, message you in chat, say your surname when you walk up. Your name simply is not held up for the whole arrivals hall to see.

One thing is a personal name board: “Smirnov / Welcome.” You scan the crowd for yourself, like in a movie.

Another thing is a company placard. It has a logo or the service name. The greeter stands with it in an allowed spot and finds you from the booking.

Website wording like “meet and greet with a board” usually means the second option. “Personalized name board with your surname” is already a red flag.

You will be met by name. Just not on a board. By a real person with your booking on their phone.

Why they banned it in the first place

Istanbul arrivals is big and loud. It is easy to walk up to a tired traveler with bags, flash a homemade sheet, and say: “taxi, cheaper, let’s go.”

To a tourist, a name board feels like care. To the airport, it makes order harder to keep: anyone can print a personal name board. So commercial greeters were left with company placards, and personalized ones were taken out of the picture.

They track the flight. If you are delayed, the car does not have to sit there “as booked yesterday.” Pickup shifts with the arrival.

You clear passport control, collect bags, walk into the public area. Somewhere around then they usually write: we are here, come this way.

Then you look for the company placard and the person from the instructions. You walk up, say your name, they check the booking, you head to the car.

For you that means one thing: open the voucher and check whether you are told to go there. After baggage, you do not follow “where everyone goes.” You go where it says. On the spot you look for the company placard, not a name board.

The exact exit and which building faces it are best taken from your own confirmation. Layouts get tweaked sometimes. The idea since summer 2026 is simple: SAW finally has a proper point, and a clear operator should use it.

IST: the terminal is huge, do not hunt for a name board with your eyes

At Istanbul Airport the same ban applies. A personalized name board is not a “premium option.” It simply is not allowed.

They guide you with the point from the voucher, a company placard, and a chat message. The terminal is enormous. It is easy to freeze by the information desk and look the wrong way for five minutes.

So before boarding, save a screenshot of the instructions. Once you are in the public area, turn data on. If you only search for a name board, you can calmly walk past your own greeter.

And in the city, why no name board either

At a hotel the logic is different. Security and the front desk rarely like commercial placards in the lobby intercepting guests.
